We were asked to create 5 different 18x24” monochrome posters visualizing a data set from the top 20 largest Black Lives Matter protests that occurred in 2020.
constraints for each poster
01. area using a grid of circles
02. texture representing parts of a whole
03. shape using liquids
04. lengths through line and space
05. lengths in areas

Process for Poster 2
For this poster, we were asked to explore texture. I decided to work with rice grains since I’ve worked with rice in other projects before and wanted to explore how I could accurately measure each data point (area of a circle of rice grains) to keep the ratios consistent. I came up with a basic formula to weigh each group of rice grains: I allocated 30g of rice to 60,000 people, and measured the other data points from there.
I photographed an area of rice grains with some trailing off to the side so I could connect them to another photo of another set of rice later on. I then realized it would be easier to just connect them all in one go and photograph them as is. I wanted to connect the grains to visualize the interconnected nature of the protests. I stylized the image in Photoshop.
